VISIT - Omeo, Victoria - Rich in History & Stunning Scenery

2/3/2017

Picture
Witness Omeo's stunning scenery on the edge of the Snowy Mountains, along the great alpine road. The township is renowned for its gold mining history, historic buildings, cattle grazing and has excellent 4x4 tracks a stones throw from town.

Omeo can be found 420km east of Melbourne and within the shire of Bairnsdale. The Town itself offers accommodation, rich history, fuel and essentials to restock before heading bush.

Omeo is an excellent base and meeting point before setting off to explore surrounding area's. It is approx 700 metres above sea level in the Victorian High Country. This is evident in winter as temperatures are greatly below average and is not unusual to witness a snowfall.

Omeo offers a wide range of activities such as visiting history site, fishing, horse riding and of course excellent 4x4 opportunities. Trout can be found in great numbers in the small streams and creeks. As Rex Hunt would say 'if you cant step over it, fish it'.

Ferny Flat Campground

Ferny Flat is an excellent camping spot located within the Omeo Valley. Head NOrth on the Omeo Hwy and then head NE on Omeo Valley Road. Ferny Flat does not have any facilities but is on the Mitta Mitta River. Home to some great fishing and a popular spot for canoeists.

McFarlane Flat

McFarlane Flat offers some great camping spots and nearby tracks can provide you with some great 4x4 action. McFarlane Flat can be found by traveling via Cobberas and Mcfarlane Flat Track and arrive east of Cowombat. If you follow the McFarlane track east it joins with Ingeegoodbee Track that has wild rugged country that will eventually meet the Snowy River Road.

Quartpot Flat Hut

Quartpot Flat is in close vicinity to the south east arm of the Dartmouth. Head North on the Omeo Hwy for around 30 minutes and keep an eye out for a right turn onto Razorback Spur.
Then once on Razorback Sput continue down and head east on Limestone Gap Track and you should arrive the Quartpot Flat Hut. There is camping available at this location and is a medium difficulty track and suitable for off-road trailers.
